you know the tumblr aesthetic houses/aesthetic interiors blogs? the ones that post exclusively unsourced images usually ganked from instagram or pinterest?

ai image generation has taken over that entire corner of tumblr like a parasite, and because i content tag for ai generated images i need to zoom in and squint every fucking time -- but i follow a lot of blogs who talk a big game about being anti-"AI art" and seem to, like. not realize? when they are in fact reblogging ai generated images (i suspect because they look more like photos than like digital paintings or w/e).

anyway here's my set of tips for recognizing ai generated aesthetic house photos on tumblr. we're gonna use this post as an example:

check the source: on posts by this species of aesthetic photo aggregation blog, there may be some kind of text that purports to be "a source" (in days of yore, sometimes if you googled this you would find some kind of instagram page that itself aggregated stolen image content; occasionally it was even the actual photographer). in our example post the text is "Thierrynuchanant", which might be a street name or a photographer's mononym or an instagram or all manner of other things, but the entire first page of google results was exclusively this tumblr post or reblogs of it, so i feel pretty confident in assuming it's completely made-up.

(this by itself is a weak signal that the image is also completely made-up, but, like... if it ISN'T, it's still a blatantly stolen unsourced photo. but if you're active in this corner of Aesthetic Tumblr i guess you've already made your peace with that.)

inspect the architecture: this particular house makes it tricky because it's purposefully artsy and asymmetric, and how the hell do i know the architect didn't make all the window frames different on purpose? so instead of asymmetry, keep an eye out for misalignments, things that don't make physical sense, or things that are mismatched but look similar from a distance (typically if you are doing something purposefully mismatched, you want to draw attention to the contrast -- so, an all-black outfit with one black sock and one bright green sock is purposeful, but an all-black outfit with one black sock and one dark gray sock looks like you made some sort of laundry error).

what the fuck is this pointy archway thing that's only on one half of the window? where does it attach?

these lit-up yellow windows look like really fancy and decorative leaded glass (i mean, i *think*; the image is blurry enough that it's hard to tell), so it's weird that they look similar in color but the left one has a diamond-ish pattern and the right one has vaguely gothic arching tracery that is replicated NOWHERE else in the house

the windowsill looks lumpy and, uh, irradiated, and the planterboxes are at two different heights. also come to mention it how are the planterboxes even attached to the thick stone sill?

why are there two slightly different styles of lamp thing at two different heights

windowpanes crooked??? also if you squint the stonework on the window frame doesn't actually make sense or depict anything

this mostly-hidden rectangular architectural mass seems to switch from modern with rectangular windowpanes on the left to elaborate tracery on the right, and the angles don't quite match up either. (i also spent a while squinting at that inverted nipple thing to the right of the round window but like, i don't know a hell of a lot about french art nouveau vernacular architecture, maybe it's... a disused utility hookup???)

plants that aren't in pots: this is the dead giveaway. ai generated images LOVE to have non-climbing plants just vibing on the side of a building.

this is not a fucking epiphyte it needs DIRT SOMEWHERE

okay now i gotta hunt down another example image so i can provide examples of mangled text and maybe mismatched architectural details in other styles. brb

London, Part 1: June 17-22, 2024

It's been a long time since I traveled alone without having work or family or a con or something to guide my agenda. I landed in London with tickets to a couple of shows, but otherwise just open-ended days I could spend as I like. This is my favorite way to travel, whether alone, with my partner, or with a friend. I love being able to sleep as late as I like and do whatever the mood strikes each day.

The day I arrived, I took it easy. I took a shower and a nap, then found a place with fantastic steak & ale pie for dinner and wandered to a local park that had a beautiful Japanese garden. I was surprised to find the sun rose at 5 a.m. and set around 10 p.m. each day - earlier and later than I'm accustomed to, even in the height of summer in Maryland.

Another happy surprise were the intersex-inclusive pride flags prominently displayed when I entered my hotel, the Premier Inn (London Kensington - Olympia).

Side note on Premier Inn: I stayed at several of them during my travels. They're a budget hotel chain in the UK that's very queer-friendly, clean, secure, comfortable, quiet, and I had very good experiences at every location.

Once I had a good night's rest, I asked myself: "What do I want to do today?" And the answer to that question was "Go shopping." I was keen to check out Camden Market, a sprawling collection of small, quirky shops and restaurants in London. One of my favorite clothing stores, Psylo, is there, and I wanted to buy myself a cool outfit. Which I did!

I also got an artsy photo taken of my eyeball to gift to my partner.

I had lunch at The Cheese Bar. It was fantastic.

There were some truly wild shops in Camden Market that were visually impressive:

I had a ball exploring the shops and little eateries (I even got a Pasteis de Nata, a kind of custard tart I fell in love with in Portugal a few years back), and I could've spent an entire day there, but I was restless and eager to see more stuff, so I ended up wandering to the nearby London Zoo. It was a pretty sweet zoo with lots of different animals and habitats represented. There was a free-roaming tamarind inside the rainforest building, which was cool to see up close. (I have a video, but Tumblr limits you to uploading only one video per post, boo.)

I wandered through Queen Mary's Rose Garden after that, and stopped by the gorgeous Daunt Books, which specializes in travel books.

London definitely has an amazing bookshop scene. The next day, I visited 10 more of them, focusing on occult bookshops. I found my books in stock at a few of them (squee!) and chatted with the owners as I signed them.

I was also delighted to see Pamela Colman Smith's fireplace at Treadwell's:

And Gerald Gardner's original meeting place at the Atlantis Bookshop:

I loved visiting these bookshops, especially if they carried my friends' books. It warmed my heart to see their books in another country.

I also teared up a bit visiting Gay's The Word, the UK's oldest LGBTQ+ bookshop, which was featured in the movie Pride (2014). I was thrilled to see they carried my friend Tamsin's book.

I also checked out the Vagina Museum. I'd followed them on social media for years, so it was really nice to visit and support them in person. It's small, and in kind of a rough location, but it's worth a visit.

That day, I had the best fish and chips of my entire life at The Crown & Anchor, which I mistakenly thought was the pub in Ted Lasso when I found it on Google Maps (turns out they renamed a different pub with that name for the show). Holy crap, I want to eat that specific fish and chips the rest of my life. Every other time I had fish and chips on the trip, it failed to live up to this one. I got spoiled early. It was so buttery and crisp and utterly perfect.

The next big trip highlight was seeing a production of Much Ado About Nothing at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre. It's a reconstruction of the Globe from the Elizabethan era. I sprung for a seat with a cushion(!) on the second level, and I had a great view of the fantastic production. I'm so glad I got to see this specific play, because it's my favorite. The cast was amazing, and seeing it in that theatre was a deeply moving experience, like stepping back in time.

They also had one of the rare original folios of Shakespeare's plays on display:

As if that experience didn't give my brain enough happy chemicals, afterwards I went to Dopamine Land. Dopamine Land is a temporary exhibit/experience available all over the world, where you wander through about 10 different rooms that stimulate and soothe your senses in different ways, including a giant, adult-sized ball pit. I really liked the first room, which was all mirrors and color-changing dangling lights.

The next day, I visited Tate Britain with my friend Beckett, who has been an online friend for the past decade, and is both a fantastic musician in her own right and also a big supporter of my band, the Misbehavin' Maidens. She and her wife met me at the museum and we got to do one of the LGBTQIA+ tours. It was a super interesting tour focusing on a handful of pieces by queer artists, with queer themes expressed in the pieces. Apparently, each of the LGBTQIA+ tours is different, so I'd definitely go back and do it again.

Another highlight of Tate Britain was seeing The Lady of Shallott painting by John William Waterhouse, which I think was on the cover of one of my English Lit textbooks in college.

After the museum, we went to a pub and I had my first Sticky Toffee Pudding! It was delicious - served with salted caramel ice cream. (I developed a preference over the course of the trip, though, to have it served with custard.)

It’s My Little Monday! With...G3 The Pony Project...Leather Face / Shut Up Pony / Brand Whip As promised, probably a bit of the oddest one of the entries, but it seems they specified that people could do “anything” and so “Luke” created this somewhat confusing entry. Is it a horror movie pony? Is it supposed to be like a cowboy because there is a branding iron and a whip like the western? The name for the entry is also unclear because of how not-documented the project was. Even these photos are uncommon, but it WAS at the Limited Time Pop Up Gallery Show because you will see her in the background of other photos fairly often that were taken there.  An interesting feature of giant pony is that it is easier to make accessories for them because they can use human size things instead of miniatures. That’s the case with these real working zippers for the mouth and eyes of the mask. The mask itself is also well put together and fits normally. The nature of the brand is a clever/artsy way to connect the letters realistically and make them like a real western cow brand or even a logo. Notice how the symbol on one side is the brand, and that it is slightly raised because it imitates how burnt flesh goes on the animal who is branded with a hot iron. (It is good attention to detail but...you shouldn’t burn animals.) The other side is probably an artist logo/character face as is common with these. Ponies haven't any thumbs so she would need someone to open the mouth zipper--maybe that’s the name origin? Her other tool looks like a fireplace poker or some kind of cow-hitter device, and the middle thing is like a corset or so. (Corseted ponies are common in fan things, they can be very pretty) This still adds up to a bit of a spooky toy like a Hellraiser or something. (Remember, this was for Give Kids The World Village children's’ charity but is this exactly kid friendly? It’s probably the strangest of the entries, and we’ve even got one with a bulldozer for hair, so that’s really saying something.) Of course, if more photos or information comes out, this character will re-appear. Because all of these aren’t documented (seemingly) anywhere, this Tumblr is attempting to catalog them all / all artist name credits and all blurbs if there are any. This one could really use some explaining.

How to Make Gifs on Your Phone (by an iPhone user)

For @thatsocfangirl and anyone else who might be interested <3 I am also still very new to gif making and video editing so any incorrect terminology is completely accidental

Step One: Get Your Tools Together

So you’ll want Firefox for your browser and a video editing app of your choice (I am currently using CapCut cause the last one I used went to paid only), also, you’ll need to locate a streaming service you can screen record from (with Firefox you should be able to use any, however, Netflix and Amazon Prime don’t allow you to stream through a browser on your phone yet).

Step Two: Capture the Scene(s) You Want

So you’ll need a decent chunk of storage on your phone if you want to make more artsy sets that incorporate multiple scenes. However, you won’t need too much space for doing one or two scenes at a time.

Step Three: Edit in Your Photos App

You’ll want to adjust some basic features directly to the original video (and cut out anything but the scenes you want so your working with a smaller file). The areas I tend to target are Exposure (usually hitting at least 80% cause the gif will always be dimmer than the video), Shadows (depending on the scene anywhere from 10-30% generally, the key is lightening without losing too much depth- but don’t worry depth and color will be added back in), Contrast (usually around 0-10%, adds back in some depth), Black Point (from 0-20%, adds back color and depth), adjust Warmth and Tint to return undertones to the same as the original unbrightened video (this will differ greatly from scene to scene), Sharpness and Definition (from 10-15%, makes the video clearer)

This step is where you’ll want to make the video really bright and colorful, while trying to maintain the same level of color balance as the original.

Step Four: Edit in Your App

Here you’ll do any additional adjusting to the above features, which will be lessened cause you’re now working from a new video as far as the app is concerned, giving you more maneuverability with coloring. But the primary thing you’ll be doing in this stage is sharpening, which you toggle to 100% and then download at the highest resolution (preferably 1080 or higher). And reupload the new video, and repeat till you get the clarity you want (I usually do it three or so times before I’m exhausted).

Then you can add in any affects, overlays or text you want to your newly sharpened and colored video!

Step Five: Convert to Gif

This step is pretty easy, if time consuming (though not longer than ten minutes a gif- with bad signal). Ezgif.com’s video to gif converter, where you’ll toggle your start and end times, use the drop down boxes to select 540 px (for tumblr), 33 frames per second, select the box to optimize for static background and then click the convert to gif box.

After a short loading session your gif will appear at the bottom of the page, with a MiB size (which to upload has to be below 10MiB). To get it to a smaller size you can adjust the frames per second which will make it less smooth or click the optimize button (I suggest starting at 5 and going up in increments of 5), and also you can adjust the speed of the gif from the options here (the shorter the gif the slower it will have to be to match the actual video speed)

To download always click the save button to load a new page or else the gif could be glitchy! And your all set!

When I tell you I'm mad about tiktok, I am mad about tiktok

Now, I don’t have the app, never have, partially bc I'm not a very active social media person, sans tumblr. I do have a lot of the apps, bc I have friendgroups and activieties that only communicate via a certain one.

I also suffer horrible executive dysfunction and am quite easily triggered into a panic attack, due to a long history of them.

So tiktoks, are the worst. They are horribly addicting, and without fail they get me stuck. I'll be bored, open instagram tiktoks out of habit, addiction, whatever you call it, and I'll be stuck for hours on end, in the same position scrolling.

I want to stop. But I can't.

Yesterday I was stuck like this for nearly 3 to 4 hours, even though I was freezing cold and the blanket was just next to me.

I couldn't move to grab it.

When I texted Hubby to ask for help, I immediately went back to tiktok, the youtube ones this time. I didn’t want to.

I just couldn't stop myself

It wasn’t until they called me I managed to get unstuck, after they asked me to do something, a thing that generally works.

After I had a mental breakdown for another hour or so.

I have a timer on my instagram, 15 minutes a day. Really, it’s just enough to answer messages and post an art piece, bc that’s what I use it for. Used to use it for. I tried installing an older version without the tiktoks, but then I literally couldn't post anymore.

Now, when my timer runs out on my instagram.

I have youtube left. I didn’t put a timer on youtube because well, I like the long videos, and don't usually consider them as wasting my time, bc they're artsy videos.

But now I've been on there for hours and hours and hours.

I can't turn the tiktoks off,

I can't install an older version of the app. It's a built in system app of my phone, and therefore can't be deleted. Same as facebook.

Out of the 7 socialmedia apps on my phone, only one doesn't have tiktok (bless you tumblr please stay as you are)

I find it horrifying, that there is a media I don't whish to see, that triggers me every single time to be stuck for hours on end, and I literally can’t avoid it.

If I would delete all the apps, the extreme version, the thing people always tell me to do 'bc if u don't it really is your own choice'

I would also delete my tv (Netflix) , my only connections to my friends (snapchat) my family and youthmovement communication (Facebook) my inspiration picture collection (pinterest) photos of my friends (instagram) and videos I use mostly for research (youtube)

Then you aren’t asking me to delete tiktoks from my life

Then you are asking me to pretty much delete every aspect of social media I use and their effects.

Please. If I would want tiktok, I would download tiktok. If your money eating app is not about that, give us a toggle button.

I already gave instagram a timer. Then I fell into youtubes trap. I now deleted (disabled y t) both of them

And I am just scared that I'll fall into the next spiral of horribleness

Nearing the end of her first trimester, Jessie J shared some photos on Instagram - including an artsy nude - of her growing baby bump, with the caption: "I just want to remember this feeling forever." Instead of sharing in her joy, trolls were quick to comment with a level of disapproval typically saved for Facebook. The pregnant "Domino" singer took it in stride, editing her post shortly after, adding: "And anyone who has commented 'inappropriate' on this post. I bet you zoomed before you commented." The photo under fire was of her naked reflection in the chrome tap of her bathtub. And for those who did zoom in, many were simply concerned about the quality of her bath. "Everyone freaking out about the type of pictures and I'm over here wondering why the tub isn't filled all the way," one commenter said. Another wrote, "I'm more concerned about the fact the water is so low." But the "Price Tag" performer also received plenty of support from friends in the industry - like "Congratulations my love" from Billy Porter - and normies alike who were just stoked for her after a long fertility journey. In November 2021, Jessie J experienced a pregnancy loss and decided to share it with the public in an effort to feel less isolated. "I could go through this moment right now today alone in private and usually do, but today I am here," she wrote on Instagram at the time. "Because I know thousands of people around the 🌎 feel just like I do. Maybe you read this and feel the love I have for you. I hope you can. Connecting is key. Hugging you all 🫂🤍." Over a year after the miscarriage, she shared that she was expecting a baby. In the announcement, she wrote, "I am so happy and terrified to finally share this . . . Please be gentle with me." Since then, the Grammy nominee has been pretty open about her experience, with a clear appreciation for every milestone along the way. "Take pictures," she wrote in a February Instagram post. "Take videos. Celebrate this moment. And if you haven't been told recently or at all. You are a f***ing G! You are incredible, on your rough days and your good days. You are beautiful. V is done~ I’m not completely happy with all of it but I think I learned a lot about lighting and mood. I’m most dissatisfied with his hair, but that’s because I’ve never done any hair studies from photos so at least I know I need to focus more on that now. It’s not 100% perfect but I need to move on so I can study q_q
